How to Send an IM to a Cell Phone

One of the most popular forms of communication is text messaging on the phone and instant messaging on the computer. AOL's Instant Messaging program (AIM) and Macintosh's iChat program allow users to send IMs to cell phones for free. This can be an easy way to communicate with friends on the go while chatting with friends online. As an added bonus, you do not have to hassle with the limitations on a phone keypad.

Instructions

    • 1

Open AIM. If you do not have AIM installed on your computer, you can download it for free at AIM.com. You can send IMs to cell phones in iChat as well.

    • 2

Select "File>New IM" or type "Control N" on a PC or "Command N" on a Mac. A dialog box will open.

    • 3

Type a plus sign and a "1" in the "To:" dialog box. Then, enter the area code and the phone number. Click the "IM" button.

    • 4

Enter your message in the message box. Note that many cell phones have limitations on the amount of text they can display.

    • 5

Add the phone number to your buddy list. Right click on the phone number and select "Add Buddy." Give the phone number a nickname and press the "Add" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • The cell-phone user will receive your IM as a text message. The user will be charged for the message by their cell-phone company.
