A programmable thermostat saves you time and money by automatically changing your home's temperature based on a programmed schedule. You typically can set the schedule for morning, daytime, evening, nighttime and weekends. Many programmable thermostat options are available, so make sure you choose one that fits your needs and lifestyle. Note that not all thermostats work with all heating and cooling systems. Check system compatibility. A new thermostat must work with your current heating and cooling system. To buy or replace a conventional, low-voltage thermostat, check the wiring to identify which terminals are used. Thermostats can use two, five or eight wires. Your new thermostat terminals should match your current wiring system.

Decide what features you want. Models have different settings and options, including lighted, digital displays; touch-pad programming; hold and resume features; and heating and cooling system reminders. Generally, the more features on the thermostat, the higher its cost.

Consider your schedule. On some models, you can set only one schedule. This might be useful if you follow the same schedule every day. Other models allow two schedules---one for weekdays and one for weekends. Sometimes, thermostat models allow for three schedules---one for weekdays, one for Saturday and one for Sunday. Choose a thermostat that most closely meets your needs and fits your schedule.
