How to Remove the Door Handle on a Chevy Caprice

The door handles on most Chevy Caprice models are mounted to the door frame, so you must remove the door panel to access the mounting hardware. This is a tough job, as the door handles were not designed to come off easily. If you have to get to them, give yourself an entire afternoon to get the job done, and start by taking off the entire door panel.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pry bar
  • Screw driver
  • Chisel
  • Gloves
  1. Step 1

Remove the window handle by removing the cap that covers the screw that mounts it to the door. Remove the screw and then pull off the handle. A pry bar may be necessary to get this out of the socket.

  2. Step 2

Slide a pry bar up under the door panel, between the panel interior and the door frame. Gently work the pry bar to pop the panel off the door frame. It is attached by plastic hooks; be careful not to break these, as you will need them to put the panel back on.

  3. Step 3

Pry along the edges of the door panel until it comes completely off. Work your pry bar into the middle of the panel and get close to the clips to help pop them off when necessary.

  4. Step 4

Locate the door handle and find the screws along one side of the handle. These attach it to the frame.

  5. Step 5

Apply a decent amount of WD40 or another lubricant to the screws, and then use a power driver to remove them one at a time.

  6. Step 6

Remove the door handle from the Chevy Caprice by tilting it back and then working it out of the slot. Two clips hold it in place on one end.
