If you are looking for an alternative to store-bought baby dolls, making baby dolls may be an option. Cloth dolls are softer and cuddlier and can be personalized for the child in your life. You can make a boy or girl baby doll and can even make a mermaid or fairy for your little one. Opt for washability and easy care when making baby dolls for young children, but consider experimenting more if you are sewing a baby doll for an adult.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cotton velour, skin tone plus at least one other color if desired, less than 1 yard each
  • Stuffing, polyester fiberfill or wool
  • Embroidery floss
  • Sewing machine
  • Needle and coordinating thread
  • Baby doll pattern

    How to Make Baby Dolls

  1. Step 1

Choose a simple cloth baby doll pattern. See the Resources below for some free cloth doll patterns. Cut out your baby doll pattern pieces, tracing onto newsprint or tissue paper if needed.

  2. Step 2

Dress your baby doll while you sew if desired. To do this, cut apart your pattern pieces, allowing a seam allowance as needed. Give your doll the look of infant pajamas by dividing the head and hands from the body. Allow 1/4-inch to 5/8-inch seam allowances.

  3. Step 3

Cut pieces from fabric as needed for your baby dolls. If the stretch in the velour runs across your baby doll's body, the doll will be shorter and chubbier. When you lay the pattern out with the length on the stretch, your baby doll will be a bit more slender.

  4. Step 4

Sew any pieces you cut apart together first, then assemble your doll according to the directions. Stuff, allowing enough softness to make the baby doll cuddly for your little one.

  5. Step 5

Add a baby hat to your baby doll head and stitch into place. Avoid loose yarn if the doll is intended for a very young child. Embroider facial features, including eyes and a mouth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose polyester fiberfill stuffing for washability, or wool for warmth and durability.
  • Avoid buttons, external jointing or other choking hazards if you are making baby dolls for very young children.
