Instructions

    • 1

Measure the top, bottom and sides of the window. Deduct 1/2 inch from each measurement to allow for a 1/4 inch reveal around the window. You will want your trim to partially cover the window frame.

    • 2

Cut a 45 degree angle at each end of the casing or trim. The short measurement (the two closest points on each leg of the trim) will be the measurements you took in step one.

    • 3

Use the finishing nails to secure the trim through the drywall and into the studs which make up the window frame. Be sure to measure and mark 1/4 inch in and up or down on the frame at each corner, so that you line up the trim correctly.

    • 4

Use a silicone, interior caulk to seal the trim to the window and also to the wall. This will help stop any air gaps, and ensure the trim does not pull away from the wall over time.

    • 5

Paint or stain the trim once you have it in place. This is a step that can be done prior to mounting the trim, but you will most likely need to touch it up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Because the exterior trim is the primary agent in ensuring that water does not penetrate the opening, it is a job best left to professionals.
