How to Check the History of Second Hand Cars in Ireland

Knowing a vehicle's history can take the stress out of buying a used car. In Ireland, you can get a free car report with minimal information or buy one for as little as €15 that provides information, including the car's number of owners, if the car has undergone a color change and odometer accuracy.

Instructions

  1. Obtaining a Used Car History in Ireland

    • 1

Go to the Cartell website (see Resources). Cartell is the leading vehicle history check company in Ireland, and it provides the longest history available on the car.

    • 2

Enter the vehicle's registration number in the space titled "Enter Registration" under "Irish Car Check." You do not need the vehicle's VIN number for a history check. You can get a history on motorbikes as well.

    • 3

Choose a one-, two-, three- or four-star report. The contents and prices of each report are listed on this page. The price starts at €15. A one-star report is free and the least comprehensive. A free one-star report helps you protect yourself from a stolen vehicle and ensures that the registration matches the vehicle. A four-star report is the most expensive and includes an inspection by one of Cartell's certified mechanics to determine if the vehicle is mechanically sound. You will need to set up an appointment with Cartell to have a mechanic inspect the car. A finance check to find out if there is outstanding finance on the vehicle is only performed on three- and four-star reports.

Pay for the report by credit card or debit card. If you wish to pay by another method contact Cartell at 1 890 252331. The report will immediately be available in your web browser window after your payment has been accepted.
