Rainbow Sun Catcher

Beaded sun catchers are pretty hanging in the sunlight. The translucent beads catch the sun and different bursts of light around the room. Sun catchers also come in very simple to large, elaborate designs. Basically, the design will be limited only to the imagination.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Any size drinking straw
  • 3 yards of Rex-lace or clear plastic lanyard
  • Scissors
  • Double-stick tape
  • Large sheet of paper and cardboard
  • 7mm transparent beads, rainbow colors and clear
  • Tacky glue
  • 2 suction cups with hooks or slits
  • Large needle
  • Tweezers
  1. Step 1

Draw the desired design on a sheet of paper. The design only needs to be almost as long as the length of the straw. Once your design is made. lay the double-sided tape on a piece of cardboard or another sheet of paper and lay the beads one after the other in rows with the tweezers. Be sure to place the beads in the pattern of your choosing and with the holes of the beads matching going down from the straw.

  2. Step 2

Cut the plastic Rex-lace twice as long as the desired length of the beads. Example: If you want the length to be 10 inches long finished, cut each length 20 inches. Also cut as many rows that will fit on the straw.

  3. Step 3

Fold each strip of clear Rex-lace over the straw with the natural curl curling in toward one another. String the beads onto both strings of clear Rex-lace in one row and in the order you pick them up from the design on the double-stick tape. Do one column at a time.

  4. Step 4

Tie a knot in the end of each column and add a drop of tacky glue to hold the knot in place. Allow it to dry completely and cut off any remaining plastic from the ends.

  5. Step 5

Slide a strip of Rex-lace through the straw for sturdiness. Glue the ends of the straw so the Rex-lace will stay in place. Attach a suction cup on each end of the straw in between the columns of beads and hang the piece in a window.
