Ice cream can be made easily at home without the purchase of an ice cream maker or any additional equipment. Making your own ice cream is not only more economical but can be healthier since you know exactly what ingredients you are putting in and aren't adding any chemicals. There are two methods to making homemade ice cream easily: using a loaf pan and freezing a cream mixture for a firmer style or hand churning it in a plastic bag for soft serve ice cream.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 eggs
  • Small bowl
  • Slotted spoon
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • 1 can condensed milk (14-ounce)
  • 4 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups whipped cream
  • Loaf pan (9 inch by 5 inch)
  • Aluminum foil
  • Plastic wrap
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • Plastic sandwich size bag
  • Gallon size freezer bag
  • 3 cups crushed ice
  • 1/3 cup coarse kosher salt

    Loaf Pan Method

  1. Step 1

Crack eggs into a small bowl and use a slotted spoon to scoop out egg yolks, leaving the whites behind.

  2. Step 2

Place egg yolks into large mixing bowl and whisk until the yolks are completely broken up and smooth.

  3. Step 3

Pour in 1 can of condensed milk and 4 tsp. of vanilla extract. Stir until it is mixed.

  4. Step 4

Add 2 cups of whipped cream and stir it gently until it is completely incorporated.

  5. Step 5

Cover a 9-by-5 inch loaf pan with aluminum foil and pour the ice cream mixture into the pan. Cover the pan with plastic wrap and place it in freezer for at least five hours before eating.

  6. Plastic Bag Method

  7. Step 1

Add ½ cup of heavy cream, ¼ tsp. of vanilla extract and 1 tbsp. of granulated sugar to a plastic sandwich bag and securely close it.

  8. Step 2

Place 3 cups of crushed ice and 1/3 cup of coarse kosher salt into a gallon size freezer bag, along with plastic sandwich bag containing the cream mixture and securely seal the outer bag.

  9. Step 3

Knead or squeeze entire contents of gallon size freezer bag for at least 15 minutes. Remove plastic sandwich bag containing the cream mixture, which should be thick and smooth. If it is not, place it back into the gallon size freezer bag. Seal and squeeze the mixture until it thickens.

  10. Step 4

Squeeze ice cream into bowls and serve immediately for soft serve ice cream.

  11. Step 5

Place the plastic bag of softened ice cream into the freezer for one hour if you want a firmer texture.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add 1 cup of crushed cookies or candy after mixing other ingredients for flavored ice cream.
  • Carefully rinse egg shells before using to reduce salmonella risks If you are making ice cream for young children, do not use the loaf pan method since it contains raw egg yolks.
