Pint canning jars are used in many different projects in addition to canning food. Another way to use jason Jars can be a display shelf. This shelf looks as if the jars are floating on the wall. It is an eye-catching project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Empty pint canning jars, with lids and rings attached
  • Wooden shelving, 1 inch thick
  • Keyhole mounting brackets
  • 3-inch wall anchors
  • 3-inch stud screws
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Drill with 1/4-inch bit
  • Screwdriver
  • Glue gun with glue stick
  • Hammer

    Instructions

  1. Step 1

Mark the area for the shelves on the wall. Put a mason jar on the bottom shelf and set the shelf above it directly on the jar. Mark this spot on the wall, as this shelf will be attached to the mason jar. Set aside.

  2. Step 2
    Pilot Hole

    Pilot Hole

Drill four pilot holes, evenly spaced along one long edge of each shelf. Drill four pilot holes into the wall in the same position as the pilot holes on each shelf.

  3. Step 3
    Anchor and Screw

    Anchor and Screw

Hammer a drywall anchor into each pilot hole and into the drywall. Screw the screws into the drywall anchors. Do not screw flush to the wall. Leave the head of the screw out a little bit. If you are drilling directly into the wood instead of just Sheetrock, you do not need the drywall anchors. Just screw the screws directly into the wood.

  4. Step 4
    Keyhole Bracket

    Keyhole Bracket

Attach the keyhole brackets to each pilot hole on the edges of the shelves.

  5. Step 5

Glue the bottom of a mason jar to the four corners of a shelf with the glue gun. Place another shelf directly on top of the mason jars. Make sure the shelves are even. Glue the second shelf to the top of each mason jar with the glue gun. Repeat this step for each desired row of shelves.

  6. Step 6

Put the heads of each screw into the keyhole brackets in the larger hole and then slide over slightly so that the head of the screw is locked in position into the smaller hole. When complete, add mason jars filled with fruits and vegetables on the shelves. You won't be able to see much of the shelf which creates the illusion of floating on the wall. NOTE: Each shelf will hold up to 30 pounds if placed in wood studs, or 10 pounds each if placed in drywall.

Tips & Warnings
  • Shelves may be adjusted if you wish to use quart jars.
  • Follow all safety precautions when using power equipment.
