How to Clean a Chimney Pipe

  1. Step 1

Lift the chimney cap. The chimney cap is usually firmly snapped into place on top of the pipe. It can be removed easily by simply pulling it off.

  2. Step 2

Clean the cap by using a garden hose and a handheld steel brush. Replace the cap if it is rusty.

  3. Step 3

Insert chimney brush. Use an up-and-down motion and scrub the sides of the chimney pipe with the brush. Most chimney brushes have a weight attached to the bottom which allows you to scrub thoroughly.

  4. Step 4

Examine the pipe. Use a bright flashlight and check the structure of the pipe to make sure the joints are still firmly attached.

Tips & Warnings
  • You should clean and inspect your chimney pipe each year, before the first fire of the winter.
