Twin bed skirts are a great addition to a child's bedroom or guest room decoration scheme. In addition to hiding any stray dust bunnies, a bed skirt helps to finish off a room, giving it a polished look. Commercially-made bed skirts can be expensive and it can be hard to find one to match your color scheme. Making your own inexpensive twin bed skirt is a much more innovative solution.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 to 5 fitted sheets
  • Scissors
  • Cotton sewing thread
  • Swing pins
  • Sewing machine (optional)
  1. Step 1

Measure your bed height from the top of your box spring to the floor with a tape measure. This will be the width of fabric needed for the height of your twin bed skirt. Measure the length of each side of your box spring. Write these measurements on paper for future reference.

  2. Step 2

Buy 3 to 5 fitted sheets. You can buy any color or quality of sheet that matches your bedroom décor. If your measurement in step 1 was 19 inches or less for the height of the bed skirt, you will need 3 fitted sheets for a straight bed skirt. If your measurement was over 19 inches, or if you want a gathered bed skirt, you will need 4 or 5 fitted sheets depending on the amount of gathering you want.

  3. Step 3

Take the first fitted sheet and lay it on your box spring. Cut off enough fabric to leave 1/2-inch along both sides and at the end of the bed. Make sure to leave the fabric at the headboard intact.

  4. Step 4

Cut your next sheet in half if your measurement for the height of the bed skirt was 19 inches or less. If your measurement was longer, cut two sheets length-wise to match your height measurement. Use your measurement for the width of your box spring mattress and the length of your other cut pieces to cut the foot board section of your bed skirt. If you want to make a ruffled twin bed skirt, double the length of each section. You may need to cut new sheets for the added ruffle length.

  5. Step 5

Pin one length of fabric to the original fitted sheet covering your box spring. For a straight twin bed skirt, pin directly, for a gathered bed skirt pin the entire length of cloth distributing the ruffles evenly.

  6. Step 6

Sew by hand or with a sewing machine. Repeat for each side. For the corners, cut the overlap and hem the edges together. Hem all edges to the desired twin bed skirt length.

Tips & Warnings
  • These instructions are designed for a standard sized twin bed, but can be applied to an extra long twin by purchasing extra long twin fitted sheets.
