ATV winch cables are extremely strong and durable, but may become damaged or frayed with consistent use or misuse. ATV operators rely on winches to provide an extra level of safety and maneuverability, so it is important to make sure that your winch cable is in good condition. If your ATV winch cable is frayed, there are a few ways to fix it, but it's best to completely replace it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Leather gloves
  1. Step 1

Spool the winch cable all the way out. Wear leather gloves to avoid getting cut by the frayed cable.

  2. Step 2

Look for a bolt connecting the winch cable to the winch. Undo the bolt to release the winch cable from the spool.

  3. Step 3

The easiest option is to take the cable into a hardware store and get a replacement. You can also contact the manufacturer, tell them the length of your winch cable and order a pre-made replacement cable.

  4. Step 4

The best option is to replace your winch cable with a winch rope. A winch rope is twice as strong as a winch cable and will not fray, kink, snap or rust. Winch ropes are also a lot easier to spool back on your winch.

Tips & Warnings
  • Winch ropes are more expensive than winch cables, but are worth the extra cost.
  • If your winch cable is frayed, do not use it. Frayed winch cables are extremely dangerous and could snap and cause serious injury.
