As a hunter you want to not only use the animals you kill but show off your trophies later on. Deer hunting is a popular sport that often has trophy mounts associated with the kill of a prized animal. However, mounting deer heads--even small ones--can be expensive. There is a mount, called the European mount, in which you can mount the skull of the deer only. This mount is attractive and tasteful yet costs next to nothing to do by yourself at home. Following the removal of the head from the animal and the meat from the skull, you can follow a few simple steps to mount a deer skull.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large pot
  • Water
  • 5-gallon bucket
  • Bleach
  • Drill
  • Mounting placard
  • Mounting bolts
  1. Step 1

Bring the water to a boil in the large pot and then drop the skull in. Allow the skull to boil for at least 1 hour or until all of the meat has fallen off.

  2. Step 2

Mix a 2-to-1 water-to-bleach mixture in the 5-gallon bucket and allow the skull to soak in it for 24 hours or until the skull is bleached white. Use the drill to drill two holes in the middle of the skull, right above the eye sockets, and drill two corresponding holes in the placard to which it will be mounted.

  3. Step 3

Mount the skull to the placard with the two mounting screws. You can now put the skull up in your trophy room or use lacquer to seal the skull and the placard by brushing on three light coats, allowing an hour or so in between each coat to dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • If antlers are attached to your deer skull, do not let them sit in the bleach; if you do, they will also be bleached and weakened and will not retain their natural color.
