How to Take a Bathtub Out
Free standing bathtubs require the least amount of work to remove, as they can be simply carried away once the plumbing has been disconnected. Built in bath tubs, or those with a tub surround may require cutting and lifting out. This type of removal can be difficult and time consuming, even for a skilled individual. This job will take an experienced carpenter approximately 3 hours, a slightly handy man may need 5 hours, and a novice can expect to be busy the entire day. Does this Spark an idea?

Measure the route you will take with the tub upon removal. If you have hallways, or perhaps doorways that are narrow, you must take care to measure tub, and all the areas you will travel with the tub. It may be wise to remove the sink or other fixtures beforehand, to allow plenty of space.

Turn off the water. This should be done at the main shut off point. Draining the water supply lines may be done by opening a faucet below the level of the tub.

Remove the spout, drain, and faucet handles.

Cut the drywall around the perimeter of the tub (6 inches or more).

Remove all screws, nails, or galvanized strips that secure the tub flange to the studs. This may require a pry bar. Lift up the front edge of the tub using the pry bar and slip a pair of 1x4s underneath the tub.

Ease the tub away from the wall. It should be fairly easy, as it will slide smoothly on the 1x4 boards. Removing the piece completely will require a helper to assist with lifting and hauling.

Tips & Warnings
Carpentry skills may be needed to remove an old tub. The use of tools, such as a saw and prybar are also necessary. It may be wise to tackle this project with an experienced, or handy individual. Knowledge of plumbing will be required for disconnecting the fixtures, and draining the water supply lines. Be sure to enlist a strong individual to assist with carrying the tub and disposing of it upon removal.
