How to Disassemble Copper Fittings
A joint is made in copper pipe and copper fittings by soldering them together. This proces is called sweating copper. A joint made in this manner will last indefinitely. But just because the solder is cool does not mean that this joint is permanent. And you do not need a pipe cutter to disassemble this joint. All you need is more heat. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Light a Bernzomatic torch with a striker, a match, or a lighter. Adjust the flame until it is long and blue.
-
2
Apply the torch flame to the joint. Heat the whole perimeter of the copper pipe. Hold the flame in place for a minute or two, or until the solder begins to bubble.
-
-
3
Remove the flame and tug on the copper pipe. The end of the pipe will pull free of the copper fitting.
-
4
Quickly wipe the excess solder from the end of the copper pipe while it is still hot.
-
5
Allow the copper pipe and the copper fittings to cool completely before handling them with your bare hands. Serious burns may occur if hot pipes and fittings are handled before cooling.
