Stoneware crocks are made from clay and fired at a high temperature. The result is a piece of cookware that heats more slowly and holds the temperature better for food that cooks more evenly. However, since stoneware is more porous, special care must be taken in cleaning it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Nylon scraper
  • Cooking spray
  1. Step 1

Run hot water over your stoneware to clean and disinfect it. Do not use soap.

  2. Step 2

Wait for the water to cool.

  3. Step 3

Scrape the stoneware with a nylon scraper to loosen up any remaining food particles and remove them.

  4. Step 4

If your stoneware is new, treat the insides of the crock with vegetable cooking spray. You should only have to do this the first couple of times that you cook with the stoneware crock. Once the crock has become seasoned, it will not need to be treated again and food will not stick to the surface.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not use soap or other cleaners on the stoneware. This will destroy the seasoning finish of your crock and cause foods cooked within it to taste like soap or cleaner. If you need to use a cleaner, baking soda is acceptable.
  • Your stoneware can be used in the oven, microwave or freezer. However, going from one temperature extreme to the other may cause your stoneware to crack. If your stoneware has been in the freezer, Let it heat to room temperature before cleaning it with hot water.
