How to Tie Fishing Jigs
Fishing jigs can be purchased with hair or other material already on them, but many anglers choose to tie their own. Some choose to tie their own jigs because they want a certain pattern that cannot be purchased in the store. Other fishermen tie their own jigs as a hobby; something to do that is fishing-related when they are not actually fishing. Learning how to tie fishing jigs could even become an enjoyable pastime for you.

How to Tie Fishing Jigs
-
1
Cut a 1- to 2-foot length of thread.
-
2
Cut the bucktail hair (or whatever material you are tying on the jig) so the top is even and will fit snugly against the jig head.
-
-
3
Wrap the thread around the shank of the hook where it enters the jig head three times. Apply a drop or two of cement over the thread. Apply enough cement to cover the thread but not so much that it drips.
-
4
Grab a pinch of hair (or whatever material you are tying on the jig) and place the flat, top end against the cement so the hair is flush with the jig.
-
5
Wrap the thread around the hair another two times, then apply a small amount of cement. Continue this process until you have as much hair on the jig as you like.
-
6
Wrap the remainder of the thread over the top of all the hair.
-
7
Apply a final coat of cement and allow the jig to dry.

Tips & Warnings
If you have trouble holding the jig in one hand and doing all the other work with your other hand, consider placing the hook in a vise, which will hold the jig and allow you to work with both hands.
