How to Build a Wedding Tent
A wedding tent can be a nice visual focal point for any outdoor wedding or reception. It makes a nice substitution for an altar, a pretty backdrop for wedding photos, or a good place to hold the cake-cutting ceremony. Plus, you can make one for less than the cost of renting a similar tent at a party or rental store.
Things You'll Need
- An eight-sided market umbrella with a white canopy
- White, wrought-iron umbrella stand
- Tape measure
- Eight sheer curtains with loop-style hangings
- One bolt of tulle
- Two strands of white, garden-style lights
- Sewing machine
- Tent stakes
- Decorative straight pins
Instructions

1
Remove cover from market umbrella and measure the length of the finished outer edges using the tape measure. Use this measurement as a guideline for the length to purchase your sheer curtains.
-
2
Sew the bottom edge of each curtain to the finished edge of the market umbrella. Sew seven of the eight curtain panels together at the sides. Leave the eighth side open for an entrance to the tent.

3
Reattach your umbrella canopy to the wooden umbrella frame.
-
4
Choose flat, level ground to set your tent up. Place your umbrella stand in this location. Insert the umbrella into the stand and open it. Stake your umbrella in place by the curtain loops using the tent stakes.
-
5
Disguise the umbrella's pole and ribs by winding garden lights and tulle around them. You may also hide the seams of your umbrella by draping tulle and lights over them, and then pinning them in place with decorative straight pins. Flower garlands may also be added to the tent to further decorate.

Tips & Warnings
The market umbrella tent is also a good design for a children's playhouse, a beach cabana or a temporary gazebo for parties and other events.
Be careful when choosing the fabric for your tent. Heavier fabrics can stress the ribs of the umbrella to the point of breaking.
