How to Recover Damaged or Missing DVD Files

DVDs allow for the storage of large quantities of information, including digital video. However, these DVDs can become scratched or otherwise damaged. Since the information is directly encoded onto the surface of the DVD, this can mean that certain files are "corrupted" or are otherwise inaccessible, making them appear lost. To recover these files, special software that is able to read a damaged DVD may be necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Open up the recovery software. Programs available with free trial versions include DiskInternals CD and DVD Recovery 2.0.

    • 2

Open the DVD. Go to the file menu, select "Open Disc" and select the DVD with the damaged or missing files. Hit "OK."

    • 3

Recover the files. One the DVD is loaded, hit "Recover files." If you know which files you need, you can select them from the menu that appears. Otherwise, you can select "All files" and the software will automatically recover all files on the DVD.

    • 4

Select the "Output" folder. At the bottom of the screen there will be a button marked "Browse." Click this button and select where you would like the recovered files to go.

    • 5

Re-burn the DVD. Take all of the recovered files (and any other, undamaged files that you may have needed to rip from the DVD) and then use a DVD writing program to create a new, intact DVD.
