Decorators Work with Homes and Businesses

People with an eye for color and design may want to consider starting a decorating business. This type of company is flexible, allows the decorator to work from home and requires very little start up funding. To be a successful decorator, one must understand color palettes, furnishings and, most important, how to translate their ideas to homeowners. Decorating allows the business owner to make money while utilizing their creative skills to help clients maximize their living spaces.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider taking a decorator certification course. This will not only teach you proper terminology and technique, but may also make clients more comfortable with hiring you.

    • 2

Determine what your market will be. Many decorators focus on a particular niche, such as children's nurseries, patio and outdoor design or office and small business work. By choosing your niche ahead of time, you can decide how to market your services.

    • 3

Get a resale or wholesale license from your state. This certificate allows you to buy products such as paint, carpet and furnishings at wholesale prices. It also prevents you from having to pay sales tax on these purchases (see Resources).

    • 4

Obtain insurance. While this is important in any business, it is especially critical with businesses that do work inside personal residences. As a decorator, you will be placing furnishings, light fixtures, artwork and other objects into people's homes. You will need insurance in case something goes wrong during this process. Look for general liability and workmen's compensation insurance to cover your business.

    • 5

Form your business. As a decorator, you may want to consider forming a corporation, an LLC, or another protective business entity so that your home and other assets are not at risk. You can do this at your local department of state or at many county courts. Consult a lawyer if you need help with this step.

Spread the word about your business between family and friends. If you can't afford to advertise yet, consider marketing your services to local architectural firms. They may be able to partner with your business, or recommend your services to their clients.
