There is a certain procedure you must follow, and it's a good idea to do this as soon as possible after your divorce to ensure that your Social Security records remain accurate and updated to reflect your legal name.

Collect the documents you will need to prove your name has been legally changed. You will need your divorce decree showing the legal change, as well as an identity document with a photo that shows your old name, such as a driver's license or state identification card.

Locate the nearest Social Security Administration office (see link in the Resource section).

Appear in person at the office during normal business hours.

Present your documents to the clerk. He will record your legal name change with the Social Security Administration, and you will receive your new Social Security card by mail soon after.
