How to Work a Hydraulic Floor Jack

If you've ever used a standard car jack to raise your vehicle, you'll appreciate how handy a hydraulic floor jack can be. While a hydraulic jack might look intimidating, it's really not too complicated. Once you learn the basics involved in its use, you won't believe that you ever lived without one. Keep a few things in mind, and before you know it, you'll be jacking up your vehicle in seconds with virtually no effort at all.

Instructions

    • 1

Check that the jack is released by inserting the handle into the short pipe-like extension. There will be a notched post inside; slide the handle end over the post and turn the handle counterclockwise. You will feel the hydraulic pressure release with a hissing sound.

    • 2

Place the saddle part of the jack beneath the lifting point on your vehicle. The saddle will be the highest point on the jack; it is the point that will take the weight of the vehicle.

    • 3

Turn the handle clockwise until you feel resistance; this is engaging the hydraulic mechanism.

    • 4

Pump the handle up and down. The vehicle will be raised quickly and efficiently.

    • 5

Lower the hydraulic jack by slowly turning the handle counterclockwise one half turn. The jack will collapse slightly.

    • 6

Pull the jack from beneath the vehicle and depress the saddle the rest of the way by pressing down on it with your foot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always make sure the vehicle is in park and the emergency brake is engaged before using a jack. Always transfer the weight of your vehicle to jack stands once the jack has raised it to the appropriate height.
