How to Play a Lap Harp
The lap harp is a small, portable harp that is -- yes -- held on the lap when played. Unlike large pedal harps, which are more than 80 pounds, the lap harp generally weighs less than 15 pounds. Learning to play the harp takes time and effort, but the rewards are more than worth the investment.

Playing the Lap Harp
-
1
Hold the harp on your lap, resting the base on your thighs.
-
2
Lean the harp back against your right shoulder. Be careful that the base doesn't slip outward, off your lap. Many harp stores sell lap harp frames or slings to prevent slippage.

Curve the fingers gently and keep the thumb high. Fingers will snap into the palm and the thumb folds down to the first knuckle of the index finger. Use only the edge of the finger or thumb. Do not pluck with the whole pad; this will produce an unpleasant twang.

Practice. If you cannot find a harp teacher in your area, purchase a teach-yourself book like the one listed in the resource section. Study the hand position carefully and work slowly until you have completely mastered a concept before moving on.

Tips & Warnings
Strong fingers is an important key to getting a good tone on the harp. Plucking a single note over and over again is a good finger-muscle exercise.
Practice carefully. Bad habits are acquired easily and broken slowly.
