How to Plant Purple Majesty Millet Seed

An impressive and easy annual to grow, Purple Majesty Millet is a tall ornamental grass that produces beautiful color in the fall. If left untouched, the cattail-like spikes provide food for the birds. The leaves of the Purple Majesty turn from green to an intense purple as they grow and mature. This 2003 All America Selection (AAS) Gold Medal Winner will look striking as a centerpiece in your garden or urn.

Things You'll Need

• Purple Majesty Millet seeds
• Moist sowing mix
• Seed starter kit, pot or a tray
• Water

Instructions

1. Place moist seed sowing mix into a pot or tray, or use a seed starting kit.

2. Cover seeds with ½ inch sowing mix.

3. Place in a warm but lighted place. Keep soil moist, but not too wet. Seeds will germinate in two to three days.

4. Transplant seedlings into containers after they are large enough (about two to three weeks).

5. Condition plants to be outdoors while they're in their pots or trays until the last frost has passed.

6. Plant 12 inches apart in full sun. The leaves grow four to five feet tall and the cattail-like spikes grow up to 12 inches.
