Start in one corner of the room next to the shortest wall. Use your tape measure to find the distance to the adjacent corner. This will be considered your length. Write the length on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Measure the longest wall from corner to corner. Write the measurement down on your paper. This measurement will be considered your width.

    • 3

Multiply together the two numbers that you wrote down. This will give you the square footage of the room.

Tips & Warnings

  • It does not matter if your room is perfectly square. Just measure the length of two walls and multiply those numbers together. If you have a 16 foot by 20 foot room your square footage would be 320. If you are laying the floor it is best to add a little extra. You can return unopened packages.

  • Make sure to measure closets of there are any in the room. Add the closet square footage to the square footage of the room.
