How to Become a Suzuki Method Teacher

The Suzuki method of talent education has been becoming increasingly popular in the last few years. Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, who died in 1998, developed a program of music teaching that involved listening, imitation and guidance from a teacher. His program was first implemented by violinists in Matsoumoto, Japan, but his philosophy has spread to all kinds of instruments and even early childhood development. Becoming a Suzuki certified teacher is hard work, but very rewarding.

Find and attend an Every Child Can (ECC) course. This one day course is an introduction to Dr. Suzuki's philosophy of talent education, and is the first requirement for Suzuki certification.

    • 2

Record and submit your audition DVD. Every teacher trainee is required to submit an audition DVD. The audition songs are pre-selected for each instrument.

    • 3

Join the SAA. You cannot be a certified Suzuki teacher until you are a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas. You can join by mail or on their website, which is listed in the resource section.

    • 4

Complete your Book 1 training course. This can be done through short term summer institutes, long-term training programs or through private apprenticeship with an individual teacher.

    • 5

Register your completed course with the SAA. You will receive your certification in the mail. If you like, you may go on and complete higher level courses once you have completed and registered Book 1.
