How to Make a Shadow Box for the Army

Army shadow boxes are all about service and memories. They display those things that a soldier wants to remember about his or her time in the service or the items of a loved one who served in the army. These items usually include medals, patches, flags and photographs. Army shadow boxes can be any size, depending upon the amount of memorabilia that you want to include.

Instructions

Decide how big of a frame you will need. If you are displaying medals only, you will probably want only a small 8-by-10 inch frame. Too much extra space will take focus away from the medals. If you will be including more, such as army fatigues, you will need more space, such as a 24-by-36 inch or 30-by-40 inch frame. If you want to include a flag, there are some shadow box frames that have separate built-in sections for folded flags.

Include any patches, insignias, medals, badges and ribbons. These items are some of the most significant articles from army service. They should be placed in like groups. For instance, all ribbons should be together and all medals together.

    • 3

Place medals and ribbons earned in order with the highest awards at the top and lesser awards toward the bottom. This way the highest honors hold the most important position in the frame and are the first to be seen.

    • 4

Use a candid army photo. To capture the spirit of an army shadow box, include an image of your subject in service. A candid shot of your soldier during his or her service makes a great addition.

Consider including fatigues. The uniform is the thing that people often forget to include. If you have the space for them and the fatigues on hand, they add a nice touch to an army shadow box.
