How to Check Transmission Fluid in a Toyota 4Runner

The best way to extend the life of your transmission is to keep an eye on the fluid level. With no fluid in the transmission, it would run dry and break the bands that make up an automatic transmission. The fluid also builds pressure and that is what causes the bands to work. The pressure will make the bands shift your car through the gears. You can also lose your reverse gear as well.

Check the Transmission Fluid on a Toyota 4-Runner

1. Crank the 4Runner up and let it warm up briefly. The transmission needs to be warm for accuracy.

2. Open the hood. The transmission dipstick is located to the rear of the motor. The top of the dipstick will be red.

3. Pull the dipstick out of the tube. Wipe the dipstick clean. Place the dipstick back in the tube. Pull the dipstick back out.

4. Locate where the fluid ends on the dipstick. The dipstick will have marks on it, indicating if it is full or if fluid needs to be added. The fluid will stop at the correct mark.

5. Sit in the vehicle and place the truck in gear. Run through each gear, letting each one engage. Go all the way down to Low 1.

6. Check the fluid level again, making sure the level is still full. If the level is not at the full point, you can add fluid by funnel to the same spot where the dipstick is placed. Pour in half a quart at a time until the level on the stick reaches full.
