Fabric pouches are a popular way to store jewelry. The breathable nature of fabric eliminates the types of damage caused by plastic bags, such as discoloration of pearls, while still providing protection. You can make fabric jewelry pouches at home with the right materials. The types of fabric recommended are velvet, satin, silk and microfiber because these fabrics will not scratch the jewelry. This project takes less than half an hour to complete. You can purchase all of the necessary materials at your local fabric store or any place selling fabrics and sewing notions.

        5-by-6 inch rectangle

Measure two 5-by-6 inch rectangles. Mark lines with the fabric marker. Cut out pieces with your scissors. The rectangles will form the jewelry pouch.

        1-inch casing

Fold down 1 inch on one 5-inch end of both rectangles. Pin in place. Stitch the edge of the folded fabric to the rectangle, using the straight stitch setting with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. This will make the casing for the draw cords.

Stack the rectangles with the right sides of the fabric together. Pin in place. Stitch the sides and bottom, starting at the seam of one casing and ending at the seam of the other. Do not sew into the casings. Use a straight stitch with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. The pouch is now formed.

        Trim seams and corners.

Trim any excess fabric at the seams to 1/4 inch. Trim the bottom corners at a 45 degree angle close to the seam stitching. This eliminates bunched corners on the finished product. Turn your pouch right-side-out.

Cut two pieces of cording, each 16 inches long. Starting on one side, thread one piece of cording through the casing. Bring the end out on the same side of the pouch where you began. Tie the ends together. Repeat with other piece of cording on the opposite side of the pouch.
