To become a dealer of firearms within the United States, you must obtain a federal firearms license. This type of license permits you to sell legal handguns and shotguns in a regulated environment. Go to the Federal Firearms Licensing Center website (see Resources). The licensing division is part of the government's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The website gives you information on the application process.

Own and operate a permanent place of business that deals firearms. You won't get a firearms dealer license to sell exclusively at gun shows. If the business becomes discontinued, the license must be surrendered to the ATF.

Meet the age and legal requirements. The dealer must be 21 years old and have never been convicted of a crime that resulted in more than 1 year of imprisonment. The applicant must never have violated federal firearms regulations as well.

Fill out application ATF Form 7 and submit it to the ATF. This licensing application is specific to dealers of firearms. You must give information about both yourself as well as your firearms business.

Agree to be subjected to inspection through the ATF on an annual basis. You must follow federal regulations regarding record keeping and comply with any requests for information from the firearms dealer licensing committee.

Pay the fee mandated by the licensing department. You will pay $200 for the first 3 years to hold the license and then $90 for renewal.
