In the same way that foreign exchange students travel the globe, learning about different cultures and way of lives, foreign exchange teachers can gain valuable insight, experience and knowledge. Foreign exchange teachers agree to live and teach in another country or area for a predetermined amount of time to gain these experiences.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Do some research on teacher exchange programs. There are many programs of various durations. Some programs to check are the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program and the Amity Exchange Program (see Resources).

  2. Step 2

Make sure you're eligible to participate in the specific exchange programs. While requirements differ for each program, some of the most common are at least 3 years teaching experience, a teaching license in your native country and fluency in your native tongue.

  3. Step 3

Discuss the possibility with your principal and school board. If you're part of a school that embraces foreign exchange opportunities, this task will be easier for you. If not, you may need to outline the unique benefits and advantages of a foreign exchange program.

  4. Step 4

Enroll in the program and arrange for paid vacation time, unless there is an alternative that your exchange program provides. You'll need to provide your own meals, clothing and other necessities, so your paid vacation will help. Your exchange partner may help you find suitable housing if you do the same. Communicate with your exchange program to find out how housing works in that area.
