How to Improve Fuel Efficiency in a Diesel

Diesel engines have a reputation for durability and fuel efficiency that easily dwarfs gas-powered engines. However, fuels costs are a concern regardless of the type of vehicle you drive, and even diesel drivers can take added measures to improve their fuel efficiency and save money.

1. Buy new. If you do not currently own a diesel-powered vehicle and are considering the switch for fuel economy, towing power or for some other reason, opt for a new vehicle over used. Current technologies vastly improve fuel efficiency. Among the features available on newer models are cylinder deactivation, variable valve timing and lifting, integrated starter and generator systems and direct fuel injection.

2. Opt for a manual transmission. Again, if you're choosing a new vehicle and a primary concern is fuel efficiency, then a manual transmission will give you better results. It also aids in towing performance.

3. Tame your driving habits. The fuel efficiency of gas and diesel engines alike are directly linked to driving habits. Diesels, however, are even more affected by excessive speeds. Driving 65 miles per hour versus 55 miles per hour can suck fuel efficiency by up to 15 percent. Fuel efficiency decreases by about 3 miles per gallon for every 10 miles per hour speed increase. Drive at moderate speeds, and avoid revving the engine and accelerating quickly.

4. Maintain your vehicle as per factory recommendations. Change the oil, replace filters, check the vehicle's coolant levels and inspect spark plugs regularly. Keep tires properly inflated. Keeping the engine running optimally saves energy and fuel.

5. Install performance air filters. High-flow air filters help keep your engine running efficiently.

6. Use a diesel fuel additive to provide better lubrication to your engine.

7. Keep unneeded weight out of the vehicle.

8. Avoid excessive use of your air conditioner.
