How to Check a Compact Flash Disk

Compact Flash (CF) cards are portable devices used for storage in portable devices, typically cameras and personal digital assistants (PDAs). In addition to their use in handheld devices, CF cards can also be used in as other storage devices, such as floppy or optical discs, to hold data and electronic copies of documents. Reading the contents of a CF card is easy if you follow a few simple steps.

      Insert the compact flash (CF) card into the appropriate slot on the multi-card reader on your computer. Multi-card readers are included on many models of computers, but they can be purchased separately (see Resources). While durable, use care when inserting the CF card to avoid damaging it.

      Left-click once on the Windows "Start" button and select the "Explore" option.

      Locate the compact flash card, which will be listed under the "Folders" section of the "Explore" window. Depending on how the CF card was formatted, it could be listed by the manufacturer name (e.g. SanDisk). The CF card is usually listed under the "Computer" section, along with the other drives.

      Left-click once on the CF card icon to view the files or data it contains.

      Open files on the CF card by right-clicking once on the file name, then selecting the "Open" option.
