Many people have heard about bed bugs from the old nursery rhyme, but most never encounter one. Unfortunately, bed bugs are making a comeback in the United States, and are especially becoming prominent in New York, Queens and surrounding areas.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • New mattress or plastic cover
  • Vacuum
  • Bags (that can be sealed)
  • Laundry detergent
  • Bleach
  1. Step 1

Get rid of your mattress when you discover bed bugs and buy a new one, if possible. If not possible, at least vacuum the mattress and place a sealing plastic cover on it.

  2. Step 2

Vacuum every square inch of your home, including furniture and floors. When you are done vacuuming, empty the contents of the vacuum into a bag, seal it and dispose of it immediately.

  3. Step 3

Wash all linens, towels, sheets and curtains in hot water. Use bleach when you can do so without ruining the fabric. Try to include furniture covers and removable cushion covers as well.

  4. Step 4

Send anything that cannot be laundered to the dry cleaners, such as drapes.

  5. Step 5

Call an exterminator for added protection, since these steps may only force the bedbugs into the walls.

Tips & Warnings
  • The more quickly you take action, the easier it is to get rid of bed bugs.
  • Don't use pesticides on your bedding or furniture. Pesticides can cause many health problems including allergic reactions, toxic chemical reactions and breathing problems.
