1
Measure from the door to where the base of the ramp will be. Keep in mind that you can only have a 1 foot drop for every 12 feet. Mark the measurements on your wood using chalk.
-
2
Create the frame. Cut the two-by-eights the length of your ramp, tapering the edges to lie flat on the ground at the slope. If your ramp is more than 12 feet, cut a two-by-eight the width of your ramp and place it in the middle of the space to provide additional support and prevent bowing.

3
Cut the four-by-fours into posts for your rails, tapering the ends so everything is level. Attach the posts to the frame with 3-inch screws.
-
4
Cut the plywood (or 5/4 board) to fit your frame. Install the board with the 2-inch screws.
-
5
Cut the two-by-fours to create two rails for your ramp. Attach the rails to the posts with 3-inch screws. Place one rail at about knee height, and the other at around waist height.

Tips & Warnings
Don't forget to measure for a slope before buying your materials. Use durable 5/4 board if you will be using the ramp long term. If you are not starting with a level concrete base, consider pouring one before building the ramp for added stability.
Always wear protective gear, such as goggles and a mask, while cutting wood.
