Microsoft Word 2007 has many great features, allowing for users to supplement word processing with charts, graphics, multiple print formats, a bevy of fonts, reference tags and more. However, there is a glaring downside to Word 2007: documents saved in Word are not automatically made compatible with other word processors. Even older versions of Word, such as the popular Word 2003 edition, are unable to read the new DOCX file extension associated with Microsoft Word 2007. To ensure maximum compatibility across different computers, saving Microsoft Word 2007 documents as Microsoft Works documents is a good strategy. Microsoft Works comes standard on most newer PCs, and its files are compatible with many other word processing programs, including Word 2003 and Word 2007. It is easy to convert any Microsoft Word 2007 document as a WPS file, compatible with Microsoft Works versions 6.0 through 9.0.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open the file you want to convert in Microsoft Word 2007.

  2. Step 2
    Microsoft Word 2007
Microsoft Word 2007 "Office Button" menu.

Click on the "Office Button," located on the top left-hand corner of the Microsoft Word 2007 Window.

  3. Step 3
    Microsoft Word 2007
Microsoft Word 2007 "Save As" Window

Click on the "Save As" option. This will open a new window where you can input the desired file name. Type in a name for your document in the "File Name" field.

  4. Step 4
    Microsoft Word 2007
Microsoft Word 2007 "Save As Type" Selection

Click on the bar labeled "Save As Type," located just beneath the "File Name" field. Clicking on this bar will open up a list of file type options. The default file type is "Word Document."

  5. Step 5
    Microsoft Word 2007
Microsoft Word 2007 "Save As" Window with "Works 6.0-9.0" Option Selected

Browse the list until you see an option entitled "Works 6.0-9.0." Click on this option. The "Save As Type" field should now read "Works 6.0-9.0" instead of "Word Document." Click "Save" to complete the file conversion. Your Microsoft Word 2007 document is now reformatted to work with recent Microsoft Works versions, including the popular 8.0 version.
