How to Make Your Own Paint Contract for Free
If you are a painter it is very important that you have contracts for each job you accept. You will need to get a paint contract signed before you begin work or buy any materials for the job. A paint contract details the work that is to be done, what materials will be used for the work, areas that will not be worked on, an estimated start and finish date, total payment for the job and a payment schedule. The painter and the owner of the place being painted should both sign the paint contract before any work starts. Plenty of places sell paint contracts, but you can easily make your own.

1
Obtain a word processing program. You can use Microsoft Word, but to create a unique paint contract you can use Open Office, which contains a program that mirrors Microsoft Word. Open Office works on Macs and PCs. You can download it from the Open Office website (see Resources). After you download the program, open it and go to new "Text Document."
-
2
Make your header. The header of your contract will include the words "Painting Contract." In Open Office, select the "Insert" menu and then click "Header" and "Default." A header bar will appear at the top of your document. Type "Painting Contract" in that box and center it. Then move your cursor to the main document.

3
Input your business information. The top of the contract should list your business name and details. If you have a logo, import it by clicking "Insert" then "Picture" and "From File" and select your logo picture file. You can center it if you like. Also include the address, phone and fax number for your business. If you have a website or e-mail address, you can include those also. Most states require a contractors to include his license number underneath the business details. To see what your state requires, contact your state's Department of Consumer Affairs. They will have a Contractors State License Board that can tell you about specific contract requirements for your state.

4
List information about the owner of the facility to be painted. The first part of the paint contract should list the owner's name, address and phone number as well as the location of the painting project. Below this information should be a line with wording similar to "I, the owner listed above, authorize the painter, listed above, to furnish all necessary materials and labor to paint the above project address according to the following terms, conditions and specifications." Be sure to put your name where "the painter listed above" is in that sentence.
-
5
Detail the work and materials. Type a line that says "Description of the work and materials to be used for the project:" and leave several lines for specific details. If you know the details you can type them in. Make a new line that says "Description of any areas that will not be worked on" and complete that part if you have that information. If not, leave space to fill the information in later.
-
6
List the payment details. The next section will deal with the payment amount for the painting job. Label this section "Payment" and have a line that says "Contractor proposed to perform the above work, subject to any additions or deductions from authorized change orders, for the" and create a new line that says "Total Sum of:" for the total amount. Leave enough space for the amount, and on the same line type "Down Payment (if any):" and leave enough space for that amount. Below that, list when payments are due and how payments are to be made. For instance, will the owner wait for an invoice before paying or simply pay on a certain date?
-
7
Estimate the work timeline. Create a new section that reads "Commencement and Completion of Work" and list "Approximate Start Date" with enough space for a date and then "Approximate End Date" with enough space for an end date.
-
8
End the contract. At the bottom of the contract leave lines for the contractor and the person for whom you are doing the painting to sign and date. Some paint contracts have a second page with additional terms and provisions. If you are interested in including something like this, you can look at a sample contract on the ACT Contractors website (see Resources). Print your contract when you are finished so that you and the owner can fill it out and sign it.
