For cooks to prepare certain types of cake, they need to use a springform pan. For instance, a cheesecake needs the support of the sides during the baking and cooling processes. Novices may find the clamp on the side of the pan's upright rim to be a daunting contraption to manage, especially when the metal is hot from the oven. However, almost all cakes prepared in a springform pan need to cool at least to room temperature before the cook can remove the rim, making the task easier.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pot holders or oven mitts
  • Trivet
  • Large dishtowel (optional)
  1. Step 1

Remove the pan from the oven when the cake has finished baking. Use pot holders or oven mitts to protect your hands from the hot metal.

  2. Step 2

Set the pan on a trivet or a surface that's safe for a hot pan. A granite counter will suffice, but other materials may melt.

  3. Step 3

Allow the cake to cool to room temperature. Most cakes need to cool in order to set correctly, and some need to be chilled in the refrigerator, so check the recipe for directions.

  4. Step 4

Take the pan off the trivet and place it on a flat surface. You can place it on a large dishtowel to catch any crumbs.

  5. Step 5

Unlatch the clamp on the side of the pan, which will loosen the circular rim. Some crumbs may fall out.

  6. Step 6

Ease the rim away from the sides of the cake and lift off as straight as possible to avoid touching the sides of the cake. You can now cut and serve the cake or transfer it to a serving plate

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't have trivets or a granite counter, you can set the pan to cool on a stovetop burner.
  • Do not remove the bottom of the pan from the rim until you are ready to cut the cake.
