How to Make Any Image an Icon for Free
An icon is a certain type of image file that is usually used to identify a certain program. Icons are the images that you will see on your computer desktop; you click or double-click on them to start a program, application, or to follow a shortcut. These icons are simple small files that are stored on your computer in a specific location. To create an icon, you only need some sort of image editor, and there are a number of applications that have been created just to make your own icon file.

Download and install one of the free icon maker programs (see the resources on this page for a list of free programs).

Start up the icon maker program and create a new icon file picture.

Locate your image that you wish to make into an icon and copy the image to the clipboard (use Ctrl-C on most computers).

Paste the image from the clipboard into the icon maker program file (Ctrl+V will usually do this). If your image does not fit in the space for the icon, you may need to use a different program, like Windows Paint, in order to scale the original icon down to a size that will fit in an icon.

Save the file from the icon maker program and you will have a new icon file ready for your use.
