How to Become an EMT Online

Being an emergency medical technician (EMT) can be a rewarding career. Receiving the proper training and education is critical for success as an EMT. A combination of basic coursework combined with hands-on training makes up an EMT's learning experience.

Online EMT training programs are limited in that all EMT programs require some on-site training to become certified. Basic courses may be offered online and are designed to complement hands-on training.

If you want to become a paramedic, you'll need to become certified as an EMT first. EMTs start out at the "Basic" level and move up upon passing state exams after getting on-site experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Research EMT programs at locations such as community colleges, private institutions and career training schools. The program will last from 4 months to 2 years, depending on the number of hours you take and state requirements. Tuition for EMT programs is often $2,000 or less for a basic program. Find a program that will meet the basic requirements of your state and local exams.

    • 2

Take as much coursework on campus as possible. You'll benefit greatly from the hands-on training and access to the professors in the classroom. Take online courses for the EMT program sparingly. Use the Internet to research and find information about exams, licenses and job openings instead.

    • 3

Study for and successfully pass the state exam. You'll be a EMT-B (Basic EMT). Next, find work with a local emergency services department, such as the fire department or the ambulance squad.

    • 4

After one or two years of working as a Basic EMT, take additional tests and continuing-education coursework to become a higher-level EMT. These levels are EMT-I (EMT- Intermediate) and EMT-P (EMT-Paramedic). Pass all exams for EMT-I level and work for one to two years as either an EMT-B or EMT-I.

    • 5

After this work experience, apply for paramedic school. Paramedic school programs last 18 months, and at least half of that time is spent riding with paramedics to various calls. Paramedic programs often cost between $10,000 and $15,000.

    • 6

Take the state exams to become an EMT-Paramedic.

Tips & Warnings

  • Online programs promising complete EMT training should be avoided. All EMT licensing requirements will include extensive hands-on training and live on-site experience.

  • Always check the requirements for your local and state emergency service companies before enrolling in an EMT program. Ensure that the school offers the needed coursework and hands-on experience that prepares the student for real emergency calls and examinations.
