Instructions

  1. How to Remove a Sticky Stain From a Deck

    • 1

Pour or spray the cleaner directly on the stain. Be sure to use a generous amount--enough to cover the stain completely. Allow the product to remain, untouched, on the stain for several minutes.

    • 2

Tackle the sticky stain with a sponge. Turn the sponge over and scrub some more until the stain lifts.

    • 3

Dip a clean sponge in a bucket of warm water. Rinse the area with the sponge to remove the remaining cleaner. You also can rinse it with a garden hose.

    • 4

Use a clean towel to dry excess moisture from the treated area. It will help the deck dry faster, which will allow you to see more quickly if your cleaning has been successful.

    • 5

Test the area again when the deck has fully dried. If any sticky residue remains, repeat these steps.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the sticky stain is from sap or a similar tarry substance, the cleaner will work better if you first remove any excess sap (or other substance). Use a putty knife for this, but be careful not to gouge the wood. If the stain is large, try using a sponge mop rather than a sponge. This will save your back and your knees.

  • Some of these cleaners are flammable. Do not smoke while using them. If your deck is enclosed, open a door or window to ventilate the area while using any of these products. If your deck has been painted, these products may remove the paint along with the residue. For painted decks, try dish detergent and water before using anything stronger.
