How to Change iPod Software

Apple will often release software updates for its iPod devices which include new features or improvements. These updates are downloaded through the iTunes program and then installed onto your iPod. Users change the software on their iPod by connecting the device to their computer and completing the update process.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • iPod Classic, Nano or Touch
  • iPod USB cable
  • Mac or PC computer
  1. Step 1

    Open the iTunes application by clicking on the Dock icon on a Mac or using the Start menu on a PC.

  2. Step 2

    Plug the iPod USB cable into the bottom of your iPod.

  3. Step 3

    Connect the other end of the iPod USB cable into an open USB port on your Mac or PC computer.

  4. Step 4

    Click on the icon of your iPod in the main iTunes window underneath the "Devices" label.

  5. Step 5

    Click "Check for Updates" in the middle of the window. The iTunes program will now check to see if there is an updated version of software for your iPod and then prompt you to install it.

  6. Step 6

    Choose to install the software now, and then leave your iPod connected to your computer while the device changes software. Changing software on an iPod will normally take less than 5 minutes to complete.
