How to Format a Job Description
A job description should be detailed but simple. Communicating honestly and clearly in the job description will generate qualified applicants. Individual job descriptions require customization; however, an effective template will make the process easier.

Create a header that includes the name of the hiring organization, the department where the position is located and the position title of who the position reports to.

Create a brief description of the objective of the position (2 to 3 sentences) including the primary purpose of the position, and how this objective affects the department and the organization as a whole.

List the primary responsibilities of the position. Be detailed yet succinct in your descriptions.

List additional responsibilities. These items should be an informal explanation of "Duties as Assigned." They are not daily responsibilities but are items that the applicant may be responsible for from time to time.

Describe who, if anyone, the applicant would be responsible for managing under "Delegated Authority."

Describe, both internally and externally, working relationships: who the applicant would be working with on a regular basis.

Describe briefly the minimum requirements for education (1 sentence), experience (1 to 2 sentences), and personal or technical skills/abilities (as many as needed).

List the salary or salary range and any associated benefits (i.e. insurance, vacation time and tuition reimbursement).

List the contact information (name, email, phone number or fax number) that should be utilized for submitting application materials as well as a deadline if needed.

Tips & Warnings
The description should give the applicant adequate information but prompt him to ask questions as well. Depending on the content, it may be easier to separate the requirements into different sections. Technical skills should be listed with bullets for easy reading.
