How to Make a Feather Bed
Feather beds are used in some of the fanciest, most luxurious hotels in the world. Feather bed mattress toppers make the bed's surface softer while still providing ample support. Many people believe that feather beds offer a better night's sleep than any other type of bedding. Commercially manufactured feather beds, though, are usually expensive. Sew a mattress casing. Add 2 inches to both the width and length of the bed. The sides of the casing will be reduced some when the casing is completely filled. Double up your fabric on both sides so that you have a dual layer. This will help keep the feathers from pushing through the fabric and coming out. Sew the casing together on three sides, leaving one end open for stuffing. Double stitch for a firm hold.

Stuff the casing with goose feathers. You will need 10 to 20 lbs. of feathers for a queen-size bed. Using 10 lbs. will give the feather bed a soft feel. Using 20 lbs. will still leave the bed soft, but it will give it a bit of a firmer feel, which is preferred by people with bad backs.

Sew up the open end of the casing. If you have left enough space, at least a 1/2 inch, you will be able to sew it closed with your sewing machine. If you have left less than a 1/2 inch, you will probably want to use a needle and thread.

Cover your feather bed in a protective cover. You can buy a simple feather bed cover at any home store or use a duvet cover. The cover will protect your feather bed from body dirt and oils.

Use high-thread count covers. No matter how well you have made your feather bed, chances are feathers are going to poke through the surface and can poke you while you are trying to sleep. High-thread counts in your protective cover and sheets can keep feathers where they belong.
