How To Access A WiFi Network With An iPod

Although some iPhone users are able to connect to the Internet over a 3G network, iPod owners do not have this option. iPhone owners who do not pay the monthly fee to connect to the Internet, as well as iTouch iPod owners, can still connect by using WiFi connections in accessible hotspots.

• iPod Touch

1. Press the sleep button on the top of the iPod to turn the iPod on. Hold the button in until the Apple logo appears on the screen. Wait a moment while the program fully loads. Depending on how much information is stored on the iPod, it could take a minute or two for it to load.

2. Touch "Settings" on the home screen after it appears. The "Settings" icon on the home screen looks something like a small gear.

3. Find the WiFi menu on the iPod after the "Settings" page has opened. Click on the "WiFi" menu. Notice there may be options when the WiFi menu opens, depending on how many WiFi networks are available in the area you are in.

4. Choose a network to connect with. Not all connections are "public." This means that some WiFi connections are only accessible to those who have passwords. Look for the connections that do not have "lock" icons next to them. You'll know which network is the best one to connect with because it will have more blue bars next to it.

5. Press the circular button on the face of the iPod. This will send the iPod back to the home page. Click on the "Safari" icon. This will open the Web browser. Type in a Web address. You have now accessed a WiFi network with your iPod.

Tips & Warnings

• If you have a 3G data plan, you are usually better off connecting that way to a WiFi network because connection speeds are faster.
• Connecting to the Internet through a WiFi connection on an iPod is typically slower than connecting to a WiFi network on a laptop.
