How to Choose a Spirit Guide

Spirit guides are common to religions around the world, though they may be called different things from a guardian angel to a totem animal. A spirit guide is a force that accompanies you throughout your practice of faith and represents a facet of who you are, or perhaps who you would like to become. Much like religion, a spirit guide can also be chosen by a canny practitioner.

Instructions

    • 1

Research your faith to try to find appropriate figures who could operate as a spirit guide. For Christians, a guardian angel would do; for shamans, a totem animal might be more appropriate.

    • 2

Narrow down your list of spirit guides. See what qualities a particular guide represents and what it would inspire in you. A raven, for instance, is a symbol of hidden knowledge and curiosity, while the archangel Michael represents strength and duty.

    • 3

Choose your spirit guide. Carefully consider your choice, as from this point onward the decision should not be unmade lightly.

    • 4

Take a day or more to reflect on your decision and make sure that it's the correct one. If you have any doubts or misgivings that you haven't chosen the right spirit guide at this point, go through steps one through three again just to be certain.

    • 5

Confirm your spirit guide with a ritual. Commune through prayer, or have a ceremony where you ask it to come to you, drawing it in with an invocation or spell. Once this step is achieved, your spirit guide should accept you, and you it.
