Plant Grapes From Seeds

Growing grapes from seed makes a great project for teaching kids about seeds and plant growth. Because they require cold stratification to break dormancy and germinate, growing grape seeds fits nicely with lessons on seasons and the natural growing cycle of plants. Although the vines may not survive outside in your area (unless you live in a temperate zone), growing grapes from the seeds of supermarket grapes can be a lot of fun. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove seeds from grapes and soak in warm water for a few minutes to remove the pulp. Scrub lightly with an old toothbrush or soft bristled brush if necessary. Place seeds on a paper towel and allow to air dry for 7 to 10 days.

    • 2

Fill a seed tray with seed starting mixture. You can purchase seed starter at your local hardware store or gardening center. Plant seeds to a depth of ½ inch and cover with seed starter. Firm down with you hands to remove any air pockets. Water to moisten the soil.

    • 3

Enclose the tray in a clear plastic bag and place in the refrigerator for two to three months. Grapes require a cold period to break dormancy and germinate.

    • 4

Remove from the refrigerator and place at room temperature out of direct sunlight. Seeds should germinate in 4 to 6 weeks.

    • 5

Remove the plastic and place on a sunny windowsill. Water to keep evenly moist. Transplant to individual pots once the seedlings reach a size of 3 to 4 inches.

    • 6

Harden off plants for 10 days in a sheltered location. Move to direct sunlight once the plants have adjusted to outside conditions.
