To Measure The Height Of A Tree With A Stick

Have you ever wondered how big a tree is that is in your yard or anywere else? Well in this article I will show you how to estimate how big that tree is with a stick and a friend.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stick
  • Friend
  1. Step 1

The first thing that you have to do is find a stick laying out in your yard. Don't rip one off a tree because it might still be alive and you don't want to hurt the tree.

  2. Step 2

Now have a friend that you know the height of go over the tree that you want to measure and have him/her stand next to the tree.

  3. Step 3

Now take the stick and hold it straight up and down at your arms length in front of you.

  4. Step 4

Now close one eye and sight over the stick so that the top of the stick appears to touch the top of your friends head.

  5. Step 5

Now blace your thumb on the stick where it seems to touch the base of the tree.

  6. Step 6

Now move the stick up to see how many more times this measurement on the stick will fit into the height of the tree.

  7. Step 7

Once you got the number of times that the stick goes up the tree multiply that number by your friends height and you will know the approximate height of the tree.

  8. Step 8

You can use this same idea to find the height of any other tall object that you may want to know.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't hurt the trees
  • Find out the height of something and then use this idea to see how close you can get to the actual height.
