Make Your Own Glass Snow Globe

When my daughter was small, she collected snow globes. She absolutely loved the look of the bright snow or glitter that would fall slowly to the bottom of the globe after it was shaken. We got the idea that we could make our own snow globes for gifts and make them personal. Here's how we did it!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Glass jar (jelly jars or baby food jars work well)
  • Small figurines
  • Water
  • Fake snow or glitter (white and silver works best)
  • Glue gun with hot glue sticks
  • Decorations
  1. Step 1

This is also a wonderful classroom project especially around the holidays to give as gifts! First, collect your jars and supplies. As far as what you put on the inside of the jar, it is entirely up to you. Plastic, aluminum, and polymer clay objects seem to work best in the water. Use your imagination, though, and create anything your heart desires!

  2. Step 2

Take your object and hot glue it to the lid of the jar. If the object is quite small, you can use some modeling or florist's clay to make it look taller. To preview and make sure you have the right height, just pop on the jar and you can see if you've got it correct.

  3. Step 3

Fill the jar with cold water until about 1/2" of the top. Add about 1/2 a teaspoon of glitter or snow to the water

  4. Step 4

Using the hot glue gun. line the inside rim of the lid with glue. Place the figure in the water and attach the lid to the jar securely wiping off any leaking water. Once sealed, apply another thin layer of hot glue around the rim on the outside. Let it stand and set overnight with lid side up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try adding tiny objects that can float in the water for a cool effect
  • Use a drop of food coloring to lightly color the water
  • Use different color glitters or a mixture of two glitters for a really cool effect!
  • Decorate the lid of the globe with some ribbon or greenery
  • Before sealing the jar, make sure you have enough glitter in the water. You may have to adjust the amount before sealing.
  • Be sure to use an object that will withstand the water as we said before. Cake toppers, small ornaments, miniature toys, and dolls are all good choices.
