Things You'll Need:
- Determination
- Resume
- A clear vision
-
Step 1
The first step is to review and update your resume. There are a number of sites online that show you examples of resumes for certain types of jobs. If you don't find anything online, go to your local bookstore and pick up a copy of a resume writing guide.
-
Step 2
Get focused! What kind of work do you want to be doing? Write down a specific list of what your ideal job would look like. This includes your daily routine, what your coworkers are like, if you are working in an office all the time or are always on the road, if you would like to work in a group setting or by yourself, how much money you are making. The more specific you get, the clearer your vision will become.
-
Step 3
Target companies that you would like to work for by writing a very detailed one page cover letter. Mention how your skills match what they are looking for. Tell them what you can do for them - this is crucial. In a down economy, they are getting hundreds if not thousands of applications. The cover letters that stand out are the ones that are targeted and have something SPECIFIC to offer.
-
Step 4
Contact companies that you would like to work for that don't have any jobs posted. Many companies don't post all of the available jobs on their company website or job boards. Again, it is important that you tell them how you can offer them something specific. If you see they are expanding into Asia and you speak an Asian language, make sure this stands out.
-
Step 5
Join all the networking groups that you can and try to go to at least one networking group a week. You will meet other job seekers who you can team up with to help eachother out. They may see something in their search that would interest you and vice versa. It is important to tell everyone you know that you are looking. They may know someone who is hiring - you never know!
